Kate Cheetham

Principal Conductor

Kate joined BCS as Principal Conductor in September 2016, following a recruitment process carried out over the summer in the light of Sir Richard Mynors’ decision to retire.
Kate read Music at Lady Margaret Hall, Oxford and has taught at a wide variety of schools. She has held the position of Director of Music at Heathside School, Weybridge and at Rosebery School, Epsom. Since moving to Herefordshire Kate has contributed musically to both the Hereford Steiner Academy and Malvern St. James and is about to take up a post at Hereford Sixth Form College in September 2017.
Aside from classroom teaching, and playing the piano and cello, Kate has always been a keen choral singer. Sir David Wilcocks was a formative influence during her time singing in the Bach Choir, and Kate has recently studied under Manvinder Rattan and Sarah Tennant Flowers, graduating from the Sing for Pleasure advanced choral conducting course.
Kate has recently been able to fulfil a long-held ambition by learning to play the organ, and is currently studying with Hilary Norris. She is Director of Music at Holy Trinity, Bosbury, as well as at St. John the Baptist, Whitbourne and also conducts the Cradley Singers.

Fiona Chryssides

Appointed as BCS accompanist in 2018, Fiona has fairly recently settled into semi-retirement in the local area after a working life in teaching, examining and adjudicating.    She comes originally from Scotland where she studied at Glasgow University (degrees in French and in Music) but has lived most of her adult life in Plymouth, and then Cornwall before moving to Herefordshire (which she loves!).   Principally an organist – she is a Fellow of the Royal College of Organists – Fiona has accompanied many choirs and choral societies  (being ‘orchestra’ on the organ for Handel’s Messiah totals 77 performances to date!) and much enjoys playing the piano when the occasion has arisen.  Wherever she has been, Fiona has been organist and choirmaster in a local church and currently is organist at Lugwardine Parish Church and directs the Bredenbury Benefice Choir.  She still examines for the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music (ABRSM) and tutors on the Diocese of Hereford Organists’ Training Scheme;  she has a small private teaching practice (piano and organ) but does find time to enjoy the local countryside with her husband and two chocolate Labradors!

Pauline Key

Chairman, Committee Member / Officer, Singing Member

Pauline sings alto in the choir and joined the Committee as vice-chairman in 2015.  She was elected as Chairman at the AGM in 2016, succeeding Chris Jarman who had completed the two year term provided for in the Constitution.

Dawn Hyett

Committee Member / Officer, Singing Member, Treasurer

Dawn, a long-standing member of the alto section, manages to combine looking after the Society’s finances with her Church of England duties as Interim Minister in Greater Whitbourne.

Patsy Marson

Committee Member / Officer, Secretary, Singing Member

Patsy sings soprano with the choir and has been on the Committee as Secretary since 2012.

Hilary Jones

Associate Conductor, Committee Member / Officer, Singing Member

Hilary’s father George Nunn was the moving force in establishing the Society in 1957.  She has sung soprano in the choir for many years, and steps in to conduct when the Principal Conductor is unavailable for any reason. Occasionally Hilary’s two daughters find time to join us too, also as sopranos.

Pat Taylor

President, Singing Member

Pat was elected as President of the Society at the AGM in September 2016, on expiry of Peter Stokes’ three-year term.  Pat has the distinction of being the only current member of the Society to have sung with it from its beginnings in 1957, so it is only fitting that she should have become President in time for the Diamond Jubilee year in 2017.

Sandra Gale

Committee Member / Officer, Librarian, Singing Member

No choral society would be able to function without its musical scores to sing from, and like all others we rely heavily on Sandra as our Librarian to make sure that scores are hired, borrowed or extracted from our own library in time for the start of rehearsals.  In turn we do try, Sandra, to make sure that they come back to you promptly after the performance!  Sandra’s daughter Heather sings with our altos but Sandra sits the other side of the rehearsal room among the sopranos.  She is also willing to step in at the piano for rehearsals if John Jenkin is unable to make it on a particular occasion.

Robert Hollis

Singing Member

Robert is one of our stalwart tenors.  He used to organise our printed publicity material and programmes despite having taken over as Head of a nearby primary school; after a spell off the Committee he was persuaded to take over responsibility for the Society’s website and internet presence.

Lindsey Taylor

Committee Member / Officer, Singing Member

Lindsey could hardly not sing in the choir as her mother Pat, who still sings with us and was recently elected as President, was one of the founder members!  Lindsey chairs the Music Sub-Committee, and can be persuaded to accompany a rehearsal.if John Jenkin is away for any reason.

Martin Ganderton

Associate Members' Representative, Committee Member / Officer, Non-Singing Member

Martin is a former (non-singing) Chairman of the Society and contributes to Music Sub-Committee meetings.  His wife Mary has sung alto with the Society for many years.  Martin is a stalwart assistant to Mike Cresswell when it comes to backstage assistance for concerts.
